Problem Solving

Updated: Nov 27, 2018

Throughout the process of the 'Another World' project, there was two main issues in which both myself and my partner had to overcome. One of the problems we initially faced was in creating our terrain in Unity. Being the first time that both myself and my partner had used Unity, it meant that we became stuck when trying to create the kind of terrain that we had originally planned.

Upon completing all of our whiteboxing and adding the desired mountains and hills around the edge of our environment, one of the main areas in our original blueprint for our environment included a cave. However, by just using the terrain brush tool on its own, we couldn't create the desired look for the cave that we wanted to. To overcome this issue, we initially created a similar shape to what we wanted the cave to look like in Maya, although we did want some sort of tunneling system to work under our environment in Unity, which could not be achieved in Maya.

In the end, both myself and my partner decided to just leave the cave out of the final environment, and to focus more on the other areas such as the two forests, the castle and the village.

Another problem we faced when creating our environment was the castle asset clipping through the hill terrain. Initially, upon discovering this we tried to identify why this was happening, and came to the conclusion that the hill terrain was flat, and intern made parts of the castle clip through the hill. To resolve this is issue, we tried our best to flatten the top of the hill as best we could, in order to make sure it was all one level surface. We then deleted the castle assets in which we had previously added and added them back into our environment, and onto the hill. This time we made sure that they were all one level and that once each of the assets were placed, we were to leave the hill terrain as it was.

Although the castle on the hill wasn't as we first imagined, we came to the conclusion that its overall look still fit the environment, and intern we decided to leave as it is and to focus on other areas in our environment.
