Genre/Theme Research - 11/09/18

In today's lesson, we looked at the codes and conventions for 3 themes, which included, sci-fi, crime and mystery.


Sci-fi

Setting - space, alternative worlds/dimensions, a place which contradicts historical past


Narrative - The development/application of new technology, new scientific principles, new political systems (conflict between good and evil)


Examples - Halo: Combat Evolved, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Ready Player One



Crime/Mystery

Setting - crime scenes, police departments, offices


Narrative - solving crimes, identifying clues, gathering information


Examples - L.A. Noire, Pulp Fiction, Murder on the Orient Express



Fantasy

Setting - lairs, palaces, alternative worlds based on already existing history


Narrative - supernatural elements, inclusion of magic/magical creatures, unrealistic scenarios


Examples - World of Warcraft, Alice in Wonderland, The Hobbit
